in 1930, sr 85 established columbus sr 41 in warm springs, muscogee county portion , small portion north of muscogee–harris county line having completed hard surface. middle of 1933, portion of highway ellerslie warm springs had sand clay or top soil surface. next year, segment of highway south-southwest of warm springs shifted westward curve city. in 1935, sr 85 extended southeast on sr 41 manchester , north-northeast through woodbury , senoia , fayetteville. @ end of 1936, 2 segments under construction: around shiloh , west-southwest of warm springs. few months later, sr 85 extended north-northeast us 19/us 41/sr 3 in hapeville. middle of year, portion approximately halfway between waverly hall , shiloh warm springs under construction. near end of year, entire highway columbus south-southwest of waverly hall had completed hard surface. portion north-northeast of waverly hall under construction, while rest of waverly hall–warm springs segment had completed grading, not surfaced. in 1938, portion halfway between woodbury , gay under construction. portion south of meriwether–coweta county line under construction, well. portion north-northeast of riverdale under construction, while rest of riverdale–hapeville segment had completed grading, not surfaced. mid-1939, small portion south of waverly hall had completed hard surface. near end of year, small portion north-northeast of senoia had completed hard surface. year ended segment waverly hall warm springs having completed hard surface.

in 1940, sr 163 built warm springs woodbury. manchester approximately halfway between , woodbury, gay–oakland , clayton county portions, sr 85 under construction. approximately halfway between woodbury , gay gay, sr 85 had completed grading, not surfaced. middle of 1941, sr 163 s segment northeast of warm springs under construction. @ end of year, portion of sr 85 east-northeast of manchester, segment fayette–clayton county line riverdale, had completed hard surface. @ time, portion of highway south of woodbury had completed grading, not surfaced. in 1942, portion of sr 163 northeast of warm springs, fayette county portion of fayetteville–riverdale segment of sr 85, had completed grading, not surfaced. sr 85, north-northeast of starrs mill fayetteville under construction. next year, portion northeast of manchester had completed hard surface. in 1944, portion south of woodbury had sand clay or top soil surface. also, gay–alvaton segment had completed grading, not surfaced. end of 1946, sr 85 shifted eastward more direct path between columbus , manchester. old path between south of shiloh , warm springs redesignated southerly extension of sr 163. sr 85 spur built in manchester sr 41 sr 85. entire length of sr 85 columbus chalybeate springs had completed hard surface. small portion north-northeast of chalybeate springs had sand clay or top soil surface; portion there woodbury had completed hard surface. between 1946 , 1948, chalybeate springs–woodbury , starrs mill–hapeville segments had completed hard surface, while woodbury–senoia segment had sand clay, top soil, or stabilized earth surface. next year, woodbury north-northwest of gay, sr 85 had completed hard surface.

by middle of 1950, us 27 alt. designated on sr 85 between columbus , point south of shiloh , on sr 163 there warm springs. segment of sr 85 north-northwest of gay starrs mill had completed hard surface. 1952, sr 163 redesignated sr 85w. year, sr 85w s segment south of warm springs reverted being designated sr 163. next year, undone. also, segment of sr 85w warm springs woodbury had completed grading, not surfaced. middle of 1955, segment hard surfaced. 2 years later, sr 85 south of shiloh woodbury redesignated sr 85e.
1960s 1990s
between 1960 , 1963, us 27 alt. shifted eastward onto sr 85e south of shiloh manchester. between 1963 , 1966, northern terminus truncated current location in extreme western part of forest park. thirty years later, sr 85w redesignated sr 85 alt., while sr 85e redesignated part of sr 85 mainline again.
