exercise “ubique”: 1982
in november 1982, 181 battery made first airborne deployment general piet joubert training area. jump included 120 mm (4.7 in) mortar drop full ammunition , equipment.
on 11 december 1984 regiment deployed 3 batteries in single airborne drop part of exercise “ubique”. mortars, equipment , ammunition carried , dropped 3 c-130 hercules aircraft , total of 200 gunners, ncos , officers followed in 3 c160 troop carriers.
it recorded military media @ time drop recorded between 800–950 feet (240–290 m) , took approximately 50 seconds equipment , men on ground. chutes stored, men deployed firing position within minutes , commenced fire on target , destroyed. these 3 batteries airlifted , deployed later helicopter part of same exercise.
the vision of 1970s have airborne artillery regiment attained, , regiment claim airborne artillery regiment in africa.
exercise iron eagle 1: 1987
on 25 may 1987 regiment participated along rest of brigade in 1 of largest peacetime drop of paratroopers @ time.
this exercise of great importance regiment saw debut of regiment s answer transportation problem. once on ground batteries hampered lack of mobility. moving of tons of ammunition , equipment became major logistical concern. solve problem 44 parachute brigade developed jakkals (a small “jeep like” vehicle) mountable .50 bmg or 7.65mm mag , trailer dropped parachute.
exercise “strandloper” (beachcomber): 1988
from july september 1988, 181 battery participated part of 14 parachute battalion group in amphibian exercise held in walvis bay, south west africa (namibia)
the exercise consisted of sas tafelberg, replenishment ship south african navy, , 6 other naval attack crafts. part of training leading exercise paratroopers received amphibian orientation navy , marines.
amongst others objective of exercise establish beach head attack launched , 181 battery commanding officer directed naval gun fire (ngf) on target area. 181 battery delivered accurate firepower on target @ h-hour.
