ibm powervm has following components:



a vet code, activates firmware required support resource sharing , other features.
installation media virtual i/o server (vios), service partition providing sharing services disk , network adapters.
installation media lx86, x86 binary translation software, allows linux applications compiled intel x86 platform run in power-emulation mode. supported linux distribution co-requisite use of feature.

ibm powervm comes in 2 editions.


ibm powervm express

only supported on express servers (e.g. power 710/730, 720/740, 750 , power blades).
limited 3 partitions, 1 of must vios partition.
no support multiple shared processor pools.

supported on power6, power7 , power8 systems.
unrestricted use of partitioning - 10× lpars per core (20× lpars power7+ , power8 servers) (up maximum of 1,000 per system).
multiple shared processor pools (on power7 , power8 systems only).

this common edition in use on production systems.


ibm powervm enterprise

supported on power7 , power8 systems only.
as powervm standard addition of live partition mobility (which allows running virtual machines migrate system) , active memory sharing (which intelligently reallocates physical memory between multiple running virtual machines).
