city council ferdinand weiß drafted plans monument, reviewed , adjusted friedrich weinbrenner, constructional manager. master quarryman,johann georg riescher (1759-1829) built monument of sculptor named franz xaver hauser (1739–1819),who realised prototype, inscriptions , effigy of berthold iii of zaehringen. shown knight shield , lance. figure aligned nearby castle of zaehringen .


the effigy mounted on top of tall square pedestal. riescher had use 10 1/2 foot long, 5 1/2 foot wide , 1 foot high stone of altar of broken domenistican church contract. rest of material monument originated slate mine in mussbach, part of freiamt today. total cost of monument added 3086 gulden. hauser supported riescher basin , column , blamed later on delay finalization of it. vinzenz hauser, brother of franz xaver, responsible gilding of monument.


in 1888, former octagonal basin of monument removed in order ease traffic , instead there basin attached on each side of substructure designed sculptor julius seitz. basin s carriers symbolized 4 elements through stylized animal forms. in 1904, fountain furthermore moved 2,50m north in order adapt changing tram lines. freiburger newspaper stated bertoldsbrunnen still labelled fischbrunnen in colloquial speech @ time incorrect since fischbrunnen relocated in 1906 northern direction , kept name continuously since then.

in accordance requirements of city council february 1958, fountain funded donations. costs amounted 120,000 german marks. on november 27, 1965, anniversary of bombing raids of 1944, fountain unveiled. however, public not pleased abstract design of bronze statue.


in 1972, kaiser-joseph-straße turned pedestrian area, then, in 1979, fountain had moved tram junction point north of intersection present-day location right in middle of intersection.
