About the simulator Orbiter (simulator)

a deltaglider docked iss, demonstrating orbiter s atmospheric visual effects.

the traditional simulated control interface in orbiter consists of 2 multi-function displays , head-up display. each features several modes of operation, commands given via keyboard or mouse. simulator supports customized control panels , instruments, including 3-d virtual cockpits , 2-d instrument panels. these allow player use mouse interact panels, , allows more complex systems , instruments customized each ship. addition of virtual cockpit allows player freely around perspective of pilot. patch 060929 onwards, orbiter has supported trackir, allows simulator track head-movements of player , adjust view accordingly.

realism

orbiter developed realistic simulator, accurately modeled planetary motion, gravitation effects (including non-spherical gravity), free space, atmospheric flight , orbital decay. position of planets in solar system calculated vsop87 solution, while earth-moon system simulated elp2000 model. newtonian mechanics simulated, not taking relativistic effects account. means phenomena such time dilation due relativistic effects not simulated, although situations noticeable rare.

the default version of orbiter has no sound, popular add-on called orbitersound available. provides engine noises, ambient sounds in cabin, radio chatter , other sounds including mp3 playlists. options enable user maintain realistic silence when craft viewed externally during space flight. there no collision detection objects in space, apart defined docking ports.
