world war ii

during second world war sint-oedenrode suffered tremendously. in may 1940 german army invaded low countries , france, , due retreat peel-raam line dutch armed forces skirmishes arouse in sint-oedenrode in attempt keep enemy @ bay. after capitulation (15 may 1940, in zeeland 2 days later) sint-oedenrode found under german occupation. there small german luftwaffe detachment of 15 people providing manned look-out (just royal observer corps) allied planes undertaking operations against volkel air base , eindhoven (air base welschap, eindhoven airport).


during final months of occupation mayor (appointed queen wilhelmina of netherlands) sacked , replaced pro-german mayor. reasons sacking central distribution office plundered blank distribution cards necessary coupons males hiding arbeitseinsatz (compulsory labour in german war industry) , using fake names. mayor tried sabotage arbeitseinsatz.


with beginning of operation market garden in 1944, sint-oedenrode situated on important location between allied landing zones in son , veghel. general eisenhower , field marshal montgomery had important task of keep corridor (which ran through sint-oedenrode) open passage of british xxx corps conquer nijmegen.

in september 1944 liberation of sint-oedenrode came during operation market-garden envisaged field marshal bernard law montgomery. 101st airborne division liberated town of sint-oedenrode (the market part) after para droppings in fields in vicinity. followed british xxx army corps (the garden part). brief time 18th-century castle henkenshage used allied hq.

post-war era

in twentieth century growth of n.v. oda steel works , ovenbouw v/h h.j. van de kamp, later n.v. oda steel furniture (now part of multinational royal ahrend) created employment in sint-oedenrode. sint-oedenrode regularly erroneously referred rural municipality. former market town urbanization had begun @ end of 19th , 20th centuries. excessive urbanization evident fact in 1930 more half of population not engaged in agriculture. after neighboring municipalities schijndel , veghel, sint-oedenrode @ time third industrialized town of eastern north-brabant. around 1950 sint-oedenrode lost third place uden, began develop after designated core congregation.
