the redbacks issued in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, , $500 bills. there “change notes” issued @ time of $1, $2, , $3 bills had blank back. these notes issued austin, texas. many of notes appear orange-colored because of quality of ink. several people have suggested “burnt orange” color of university of texas @ austin came coloring, cannot proven.


by 1842, government of republic of texas not accept bills payment of taxes. currency regained value before texas annexed united states. however, texans used bank notes other states , shinplasters instead of texas money.


under compromise of 1850, texas given $10 million land had claimed outside present state boundary. money, texas paid off debts, including redemption of redbacks.


the redbacks , change notes redeemed , cut-cancelled. notes cut-cancelled keep them going out door , coming in front door redeemed again. these notes highly sought after collectors. few notes never redeemed or cut-cancelled; notes valued more highly.


two republic of texas heroes found on redbacks. both had died prior issuance of notes. deaf smith found on $5 redback, while “father of texas,” stephen f. austin found on $50 note.

a new series of currency, called exchequer bills, issued in 1842. these similar once again treasury bills , little use made of them general public.


the republic of texas had little in way of silver , gold , never minted coins.
