just outside town border lies lake ijzeren man (literally translated iron man). named after machine dug in years 1890 1915. sand needed fill expansion of nearby city of s-hertogenbosch. lake 2 kilometers long, has small island , used recreation.


vught has castle, called maurick; history dates 13th century. in 1629 castle occupied frederick henry, prince of orange. frederick henry wanted have castle headquarters siege of s-hertogenbosch. castle has been adapted house restaurant, has been recognised 1 michelin star.


ewald marggraff

ewald marggraff well-to-do nobleman lived in vught in twentieth century. became hermit, had studied law , acquired large amount of land , several buildings. argued local authorities, on land issues. chose let properties deteriorate, officials opposed, letting lands go enabled them return natural habitat. animal species lived on land had disappeared elsewhere. land holdings in , around town of vught never open general public. on 7 december 2003 marggraff s manor (zionsburg) burned down; body found later in entrance hallway near front door.


marggraff s surviving sisters founded non-profit corporation, marggraff stichting, take on , manage late brother s extensive landholdings public use. organisation has opened land public access, allowing people around region hike in forests.


the non-profit has plans rebuild marggraff s manor. in cooperation 6 architects bna zeist, netherlands, developed design , use plans, under consideration local authorities.
