on 22 december battalion golani brigade launched diversionary attack on positions near gaza-rafah road. in preparation offensive, israeli army had been able clear route through desert, by-passing defences on beersheba al-auja road. on 27 december 1948 armoured brigade attacked al-auja unexpected quarter. after 24 hours of fighting, egyptians surrendered in disarray. victory alon realised there no egyptian defences left west of el-arish , prepared capture entire sinai peninsula. negev brigade followed tanks of 8th brigade across egyptian border on night of 28 december , moved towards el-arish. 30 december 1948 on outskirts of town s airfield. @ same time units harel brigade moved further west sinai. on 29 december united nations security council ordered cease-fire.
