on 9 may 2017, kernich-drew signed rockingham flames of state basketball league rest of 2017 season. made debut flames 3 days later, recording 12 points, 6 rebounds , 4 steals in 67–64 win on east perth eagles. on 19 may 2017, scored game-high 25 points in 78–73 win on joondalup wolves. on 27 may 2017, recorded game-high 27 points , 11 rebounds in 84–79 loss geraldton buccaneers. on 2 june 2017, scored season-high 29 points in 88–86 loss cockburn cougars. on 8 july 2017, set new season high 38 points in 105–103 win on east perth. on 17 july 2017, ruled out rest of sbl season after suffering broken jaw against perry lakes hawks 3 days earlier. in 10 games flames, averaged 21.0 points, 5.2 rebounds , 2.5 assists per game.


after registering dnp in wildcats 2017–18 season opener, kernich-drew had 11 points in 10 minutes against illawarra hawks in team s next game on 13 october 2017.
