since inception website had allowed users upload music playlists profile page. users upload 10 songs @ time unlimited number of songs allowed on given playlist (they upload more songs after first ten starting second upload , specifying should added pre-existing playlist.) brought site initial popularity due ease people share copyrighted digital music. 1 download each track individually in mp3 format.


in order combat illegal music sharing (as intent users able share music had legal right to), site cut maximum uploads @ 1 time five, , three. removed ability right click , download each individual track , instead put link *.m3u playlist file. users save file , open text editor, , cut , paste individual file links , save mp3 files.


in july 2008, site removed ability download *.m3u playlist file , replaced embedded music player. users can still use third party software obtain original mp3 files (which stored in computer s download cache.) nonetheless, these changes (as large number of users forcibly removed site due copyright violations) have affected size of user base.
