when first arrived in edinburgh in 1865, masson lived in rosebery crescent, lived @ 10 regent terrace 1869 1882 before moving great king street. among friends used visit him famous philosopher john stuart mill , historian thomas carlyle. j.m. barrie student of masson in 1878–1882, , massie credited being future dramatist s literary mentor.


a bust of masson presented senate of university of edinburgh in 1897. in 1900–1901 masson listed living @ 2 lockharton gardens in south-west edinburgh (designed sir james gowans). died in edinburgh , buried in north-west section of grange cemetery in edinburgh next main north path.
