the cause of wars of scottish independence uncertainty on succession of scottish crown following death of alexander iii in 1286. edward of england supported claim of john balliol, crowned king of scots in 1292, pressed own claim sovereignty on scotland. after balliol s removal , exile, robert bruce broke english camp , took own rival claim crown, leading resistance edward. robert declared himself king, after killing chief rival , cousin, , crowned in 1306. decisively defeated english, under edward ii, @ bannockburn in 1314.


peace talks held between 1321 , 1324. little progress made, english refused recognise robert bruce king of scots, although truce agreed in 1323, last thirteen years. edward ii claimed adhered truce, allowed english privateers attack flemish vessels trading scotland. example, privateers seized flemish vessel pelarym, worth £2,000, , massacred scots on board. robert bruce demanded justice, in vain, , renewed auld alliance between scotland , france, concluded 26 april 1326, @ corbeil. in 1327, scots invaded northern england , defeated english @ stanhope in weardale in county durham. before this, bruce invaded ulster in ireland.
