history

although formal instructional programs @ jarvis began on january 13, 1913, enrollment of twelve students, in elementary grades, school began 1904, when negro disciples of christ of texas began plan school black youth. major james jarvis donated land upon school built; family deeded 456 acres christian women s board of missions on condition maintained school blacks. jarvis opened doors jarvis christian institute, modeled after southern christian institute located west of jackson in edwards, mississippi.


jarvis historically black college remains of twelve founded disciples of christ church.


jarvis first students educated in remains of old logging camp , later in cabin became school s first multi-purpose building.


1910s

thomas buchanan frost came school superintendent in 1912. mr. charles albert berry joined him principal. in 1914, james nelson ervin became first president of jarvis, , served in capacity until 1938. during first year of ervin s tenure, high school classes added curriculum. became 1 of few places @ time @ blacks in east texas complete high school education. college work offered 1916.


the executive committee of national women s board voted in may, 1915, appropriate $1,000 sawmill purchased , installed on campus. sawmill operated 1920s through 1940s male students in summer. cut wood structures on campus , fire furnaces , stoves used during winter months around campus. of buildings on jarvis campus built during 1920s-1940s made wood mill. of buildings burned.


1920s

in 1927, junior college courses integrated in curriculum. in 1928, school incorporated college.


1930s

senior college course offerings introduced @ jarvis in 1937. emma smith building, used house administration offices, built in 1936 , campus structure surviving ervin presidency.


in 1938, peter clarence washington began tenure second president of jarvis christian college. high school work eliminated curriculum same year.


in 1939, state of texas granted formal charter jarvis christian college.


1940s

dr. john b. eubanks became executive vice president of jarvis in 1949 , credited introducing general education program , helping school earn recognition southern association of colleges , schools. recognition came in 1950.


1950s

eubanks became third president of jarvis christian college in 1951. u in 1953, dr. cleo walter blackburn, became college president.


1960s

blackburn ensured affiliation between jarvis , texas christian university in 1964 renewed twice , terminated in 1976. in 1964, agro-industrial offerings eliminated curriculum. olin library , communication center opened students in 1965. in 1966, dr. perpener became fifth president of jarvis , first alumni appointed office. in 1966, jarvis granted membership in southern association of colleges , schools. jarvis affiliated texas association of developing colleges, six-college consortium of historically black colleges next year.in 1969, charles a. meyer science , mathematics center opened.


1970s

four additional residence halls opened on campus in 1970s.


2010s

in may 2017, announced jarvis christian college offer courses in dallas @ southwest center mall beginning august 2017. courses available in criminal justice, business management, religion, data analytics, , cybersecurity.
