spartan stadium hosts varsity football games , other events.


until 1920s, spartans played on old college field northwest of current stadium. in 1920s school officials voted construct new stadium. new college field ready in fall of 1923 capacity of 14,000. in 1935 seating capacity increased 26,000 , facility dedicated macklin field. 1957, upper decks added east , west sides, boosting capacity 76,000. same season michigan state dropped name macklin stadium in favor of current name, spartan stadium.


in 2005 university finished new $64 million expansion project spartan stadium. featured addition of 3,000 club seats in spartan club, 24 suites , 193-seat press box, bringing current stadium capacity 75,005. original world war ii-era terracotta cast of spartan statue moved indoors atrium of new structure protect elements , occasional vandalism, , new bronze cast made outdoors. 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m) addition houses msu alumni association, university development , other units.


the stadium boasts capacity of 75,005, making big ten s 6th largest stadium , 23rd largest college football stadium in country. in 2010 spartan stadium had 19th highest attendance in ncaa division fbs. crowd noise in stadium gets loud stanley kubrick’s spartacus (1960) uses recording of crowd noise during 1959 michigan state-notre dame game.


for 2007 season, student section held approximately 13,000 fans. basketball student section (the izzone), michigan state student alumni foundation used oversee subgroup in football student section named corner blitz. when head coach mark dantonio took on football program in 2006, corner blitz united normal student section. entire student section receives special t-shirt voted on annually.


three new video boards installed prior 2012 season. larger south led board measures 47.2 feet (14.4 m) high 114.8 feet (35.0 m) wide total of 5,412 square feet (502.8 m). 2 north led boards measure 31.5 feet (9.6 m) high 52.5 feet (16.0 m) wide total of 1,653.75 square feet (153.638 m) each. when combined, 3 boards measure 8,719.5 square feet (810.07 m), making largest combined board system in country. also, stadium includes 10 feet (3.0 m) high 450 feet (140 m) wide ribbon video board along top of bleachers in north endzone, adds 4,500 square feet (420 m) make grand total of 13,219.5 square feet (1,228.13 m).


duffy daugherty building / skandalaris center

in 2007 michigan state expanded duffy daugherty football building $15 million expansion , renovation project. face-lift started construction of 25,000-square-foot (2,300 m) skandalaris football center features new team, staff , position meeting rooms, coaches offices, msu football players lounge , demmer family hall of history. msu alumni robert , julie skandalaris of bloomfield hills, mich., donated $5 million lead gift $15 million project. in 2008, weight room increased in size 9,000 16,500 square feet (1,530 m) @ cost of $2 million. complex includes 86,000-square-foot (8,000 m) indoor practice facility full in-door football field, 2 outdoor practice football fields , training room rehab , hydrotherapy section. graphics in space provided ohio-based environmental designer, ze design.
