spiny lobsters differ true lobsters in having large spiny antennae , lacking pincers on front legs. panulirus penicillatus grows maximum length of 40 centimetres (16 in), more normal length 30 centimetres (12 in), males growing larger sizes females. there group of 4 strong spines joined @ base, attached plate in front of carapace antennules attached. colour of spiny lobster variable, ranging yellowish-green rusty-brown or bluish-black. there small white spots on carapace , abdomen , pair of larger white spots near outer edge of first abdominal segment. legs dark green or red yellow longitudinal stripes. antennules not banded.
