tim stevenson appointed legislative council of british columbia, becoming canada s first openly gay cabinet minister.
little sisters book , art emporium v. canada (minister of justice), landmark supreme court of canada case filed little sister s book , art emporium against canada customs, begins.
september 15 - toronto police raid toronto women s bathhouse committee event. no charges laid against participants, although police recorded names of 10 women. 2 volunteers charged under liquor licence act, event having had special occasion permit. charges later stayed on constitutional grounds; charter rights of participants deemed have been violated. in subsequent protest supporters made use of term panty raid — march on offices of toronto police services 52 division on october 28 features protestors, including male , female supporters waving undergarments in air. city councillor kyle rae sued defamation officers involved, referring investigation panty raid.


2001

june 10 - joe clark marches grand marshal of calgary pride, becoming first former prime minister of canada ever attend pride parade in capacity.
september 7 - pridevision, world s first lgbt-specific television channel, launched headline media group.
november 17 - in 1 of canada s notorious anti-gay hate crimes, vancouver resident aaron webster assaulted , killed in stanley park 4 young offenders. march , vigil commemorating webster , protesting anti-gay violence held following day.
november 29 - yukon mla dale eftoda introduces partner robert brown in yukon legislative assembly, becoming first openly gay member of body.

2002

may 10: in marc hall v. durham catholic school board, judge orders durham catholic district school board allow marc hall, openly gay student, bring same-sex date high school prom.
december 12: goliath s, bathhouse in calgary, alberta, raided calgary police. charges move through courts; crown drops charges against customers of bathhouse in december 2004, proceeds charges against bathhouse owners.

2003

june 12: court of appeal ontario rules, in halpern v. canada, common law definition of marriage being between 1 man , 1 woman violates section 15 of canadian charter of rights , freedoms. decision legalizes same-sex marriage in ontario, , sets legal precedent – on next 2 years, similar court decisions legalize same-sex marriage in 7 provinces , 1 territory before federal civil marriage act passed in 2005.
november 15: same-sex marriage recognized courts, british columbia cabinet minister ted nebbeling becomes canada s first serving cabinet minister legally marry same-sex partner.

2004

march 24: gay ontario mpp dominic agostino dies of cancer. controversy results when initial media reports of death state married woman.
august 13: police raid warehouse baths in hamilton, ontario.

2005

may 17: gay mla lorne mayencourt reelected in vancouver-burrard in british columbia provincial election, , gay candidate nicholas simons elected first term in powell river-sunshine coast. mayencourt s victory not finalized until june, however, due recount battle gay challenger tim stevenson.
june 26: on 25th anniversary of toronto s pride week, bill blair becomes first chief of police in city s history participate in parade.
july 19: federal civil marriage act, legalizing same-sex marriage across canada, given royal assent.
september 25: allison brewer wins leadership of new brunswick new democratic party, becoming first openly lesbian leader of political party, , first openly gay leader of provincial political party, in canada.
november 15: openly gay andré boisclair wins leadership of parti québécois in quebec.

2006

july 26 - august 5: montreal hosts 2006 world outgames. on july 29, declaration of montreal, international statement of principle pertaining human rights of lgbt people around world, adopted @ conference held part of festivities.
november - divers/cité, montreal s primary lgbt pride festival since 1993, decides reposition general arts , music festival. new group, fierté montréal, incorporates take on management of pride festival. both events continue coexist, @ separate times during summer, until divers/cité folds in 2015.

2007

april 16: 103.9 proud fm, canada s first lgbt radio station , first in world operated commercial broadcaster rather community non-profit group, launched in toronto.
october 10: ontario provincial election held. in addition gay mpps george smitherman, paul ferreira , kathleen wynne, gay candidates include andrea németh, former editor fab, in etobicoke—lakeshore , paul pighin, first openly hiv-positive person run major party candidate provincial office in ontario, in london west.

2008

september 29: @ all-candidates debate staged high school student audience in sudbury during 2008 federal election, independent candidate david popescu responds question same-sex marriage stating homosexuals should executed . remarks criticized across canada, , greater sudbury police service investigates whether comments constitute crime under canadian hate speech legislation. on october 2, calls execution of egale canada executive director helen kennedy in interview on cfrb, leading second hate crimes investigation toronto police.
october 29: 2 provincial by-elections held in british columbia fill vacancies in provincial legislative assembly. both won openly gay candidates — spencer herbert elected in vancouver-burrard, , jenn mcginn elected in vancouver-fairview.
november 3: lesbian couple, jane currie , anji dimitriou, physically assaulted while waiting pick son @ gordon b. attersley public school in oshawa, ontario mark scott, parent of child @ school. on 300 people gather outside oshawa city hall on november 14 protest incident. durham regional police service later announce incident not prosecuted hate crime, scott neither advocated genocide nor incited else join in attack.

2009

february 5: ryan cran, 1 of killers in aaron webster incident of 2001, released on parole after serving 4 years of six-year sentence.
march 5: ontario s ministry of attorney general announces have concluded hate crimes investigation in david popescu incident of 2008, , officially charge popescu 2 counts of willful promotion of hatred, under section 319(2) of criminal code. court appearance scheduled april 15.
march 13: shawn woodward charged aggravated assault after physically attacking 62-year-old ritchie dowrey in vancouver s fountainhead pub, allegedly because he’s faggot. deserved it. dowrey had briefly bumped woodward s shoulder, heterosexual woodward characterized during trial predatory sexual advance. although dowrey survived assault, suffered serious , permanent brain damage, , spent entire rest of life living in care facilities until death in 2015.
april 24: in british columbia provincial election campaign, liberal candidate marc dalton faces controversy when e-mail sent colleague in 1996 released media, in stated that



may 12: on election night in british columbia, out gay mla spencer herbert re-elected in vancouver-west end , out gay mla nicholas simons re-elected in powell river-sunshine coast. out lesbian mla jenn mcginn defeated in vancouver-fairview, out lesbian, mable elmore, elected in vancouver-kensington.
