february 8: 2010 winter olympics begin in vancouver , whistler, british columbia. facilities in whistler include event s first-ever pride house lgbt athletes.
february 17: during olympic coverage on french-language sports network rds, commentators claude mailhot , alain goldberg suggest figure skater johnny weir should undergo gender test see if should competing woman. quebec council of gays , lesbians subsequently files complaint canadian broadcast standards council.
march 2: liberal , new democratic party mps criticize jason kenney, federal minister of citizenship , immigration, after revealed ordered removal of references canada s tolerance , acceptance of lgbt people newest version of ministry s study guide prospective new citizens.
may 21: following controversy on inclusion of activist group queers against israeli apartheid in 2009 toronto pride parade, event s organizers vote ban use of phrase israeli apartheid 2010 parade, after councillor giorgio mammoliti brings motion before toronto city council have city withdraw funding event if group not banned.
august: shawn woodward, physically assaulted ritchie dowrey in vancouver s fountainhead pub (see march 13, 2009), found guilty of assault. justice jocelyn palmer rejects woodward s defense dowrey had groped him, finding [woodward s] intention deny, deflect , dissemble. fabricated story justify outrageous assault. subsequently sentenced 6 years in jail on november 8.
october 2: concurrently controversial spate of gay teen suicides in united states, 2 lesbian teenagers found dead in forest near orangeville, ontario.
october 18: home of gay couple in little pond, prince edward island firebombed. both men escaped fire unharmed, home destroyed. in late october , november, series of rallies , fundraising concerts held in both little pond , charlottetown support couple , oppose homophobic violence.

2011

january 10: in ruling canadian broadcast standards council, dire straits song money nothing banned canadian radio airplay after gay resident of st. john s files complaint because lyrics contain derogatory slur faggot . ruling later rescinded on august 31, council leaving individual radio stations discretion whether or not play song.
january 13: british columbia mla mike farnworth comes out, becoming fourth openly gay member of provincial legislature. alongside caucus colleague nicholas simons, second openly gay candidate in party s 2011 leadership race.
april: controversial activist group queers against israeli apartheid announces withdrawal 2011 toronto pride parade, after toronto city council reasserts intention withdraw funding support parade if group participates.
may 2: in 2011 election, gay members of parliament rob oliphant , mario silva defeated, , bill siksay retires politics; however, 3 new gay candidates, randall garrison, dany morin , philip toone, win seats in parliament. along returning incumbents libby davies , scott brison, number of openly gay members of parliament remains @ five.
october 11: in newfoundland , labrador provincial election, gerry rogers becomes first openly gay politician ever elected newfoundland , labrador house of assembly.
october 14: jamie hubley, son of ottawa city councillor allan hubley, commits suicide after having blogged month anti-gay bullying facing @ school. bullying had begun grade 7, students on jamie s bus attempting stuff batteries in mouth because preferred figure skating on hockey. incident leads several canadian media , political figures posting videos dedicated hubley part of online gets better project, act of legislative assembly of ontario impose stiffer penalties bullying in schools passes in 2012.

2012

march 19: craig scott wins federal by-election in toronto—danforth, becoming sixth openly gay mp in 41st canadian parliament.
april 14: allan hunsperger, christian minister tofield, alberta running wildrose candidate in alberta provincial election, becomes focus of controversy when blog post wrote in 2011, in capacity church minister, publicized in media. blog post, structured , themed rebuttal lady gaga s song born way , asserts accepting people way cruel , not loving , , gay people destined suffer rest of eternity in lake of fire .
april 17: halifax gay activist raymond taavel beaten death outside menz & mollyz, gay bar on city s göttingen street, andre denny, paranoid schizophrenic on unsupervised leave nearby mental hospital, after attempting break fight between denny , man. taavel former chair of city s gay pride festival , former editor @ lgbt magazine wayves , worked @ spiritual magazine shambhala sun. on 1,000 people attend vigil in taavel s memory later same evening, includes performances poet tanya davis, actor , writer stewart legere , singer-songwriters rose cousins , ria mae. although there unconfirmed allegations denny used anti-gay slurs while attacking taavel, date media , police have not asserted case constituted hate crime, attributing attack denny s mental illness rather anti-gay bias. ironically, taavel had survived more anti-gay physical attack, wrote in wayves in may 2010.
april 18: second year in row, toronto mayor rob ford declines invitation attend city s annual pride parade, on grounds conflicts family s traditional cottage weekend. unlike in 2011, however, subsequently attends pflag event on may 17 mark international day against homophobia.
april 20: due channel switching error @ shaw cable facilities in hamilton, morning newscast on chch-tv replaced 3 minutes clip of gay porn movie.
may 19: following legal battle reverse disqualification not being naturally born female , vancouver resident jenna talackova becomes first transgender woman compete in miss universe pageant. not make top 5, 1 of 4 contestants awarded title of miss congeniality .

april 2 - gay owners of restaurant in morris, manitoba announce closing establishment, 3 months after opening it, due homophobic persecution residents of town. situation draws widespread criticism across canada, including comments of support owners morris mayor gavin van der linde, manitoba premier greg selinger , opposition leader brian pallister; selinger announces have lunch @ restaurant during upcoming flood preparation tour of red river valley region.
april 18 - proudpolitics, new cross-partisan organization dedicated creating networking , fundraising opportunities lgbt politicians , candidates, launches in toronto.
june 6 - toronto police service announces investigating possibility 3 unsolved missing persons cases involving men last seen in church , wellesley neighbourhood, city s primary gay village, may linked.
june 7 - edmonton pride begins raising of rainbow flag on grounds of cfb edmonton, first time in canadian history flag has flown on military base.
june 24 - first time in mayoralty, rob ford attends annual kickoff of toronto s pride week read official city proclamation. kathleen wynne announces march in parade, becoming first incumbent premier of ontario ever so.
june 19 - media begin publicize series of threatening letters received lesbian couple in kingston, ontario, anonymous small dedicated group of kingston residents devoted removing scourge of homosexuality in our city .
august 7 - real women of canada issues statement criticizing foreign affairs minister john baird speaking out on lgbt human rights issues in both uganda , russia part of canada s foreign policy.
october 12 - scott jones, gay resident of new glasgow, nova scotia, stabbed knife-wielding man after leaving acro lounge. left paraplegic attack.
october 21 - priape, lgbt-oriented clothing retailer stores in montreal, toronto, calgary , vancouver, closes 4 of locations following bankruptcy proceedings filed earlier in year. following quebec superior court approval of purchase offer on october 30, new owners announce reopen flagship store in montreal, other locations remain closed.
