enu founded on 23 may 1996, on initiative of nursultan nazarbayev, president of republic of kazakhstan, on basis of joining of 2 universities, akmola civil engineering institute , akmola pedagogical institute. university granted special status of national presidential decree 5 july 2001, “considering significant contribution development , professional formation of person on basis of national , universal values, science , technology”. highly symbolic university in honour of historian , ethnologist, 1 of founders of eurasianism concept, lev gumilyov.

in 2012, eurasian national university become centre of commemorative celebrations, devoted 100th anniversary of birth of lev gumilyov.
