terence conran established 2 manufacturing companies during 1950s, conran furniture , conran fabrics. wanted make attractive, affordable design available general public. in 1964 conran opened first habitat in brompton cross, london. sold contemporary home furnishings not available anywhere else in britain. prices low enable customers replace these household items every few years fashions changed. products mass-produced , easy acquire. end of decade, habitat had 9 uk branches , maintains reputation inexpensive, appealing design.


hull traders

hull traders had acquired reputation fabric designs winning several awards. shirley craven, designed textiles company, selected designs freelance textile artists , oversaw process of printing these onto fabric. designers carried out work company included eduardo paolozzi, humphrey spender , althea mcnish, design golden harvest hull traders best selling textile. hull traders based in london before moving converted mill in trawden, lancashire. designs screen printed hand using pigment dyes. aim produce short runs of avant-garde textiles, sold in hull traders showroom off oxford street in london.


eddie squires

gunta stölzl

gunta stölzl german textile artist played fundamental role in development of bauhaus school’s weaving workshop. created immense change within textile field uniting art practices taught @ bauhaus traditional textile techniques , became first woman master @ school. in teaching, gunta applied ideas modern art acquired in classes of johannes itten (color theory), paul klee (visual thinking) , wassily kandinsky (abstract art) new weaving practice. , other students took courses , learned craft outside of school, becoming experts. lack of technical guidelines @ bauhaus school allowed , colleagues experiment different materials , techniques, changing traditional textile , weaving techniques.


stölzl became weaving master in 1925 when bauhaus relocated dessau. weaving practices @ department became of more functional nature following needs of contemporary industrial design. under direction, bauhaus weaving workshop became 1 of successful facilities.
