on february 14, 1934, first nhl all-star game, albeit unofficial one, held benefit toronto maple leafs forward ace bailey, suffered career-ending injury. on december 12, 1933, near end of second period of game between leafs , boston bruins in boston garden, bailey tripped behind bruins defenceman eddie shore, in retaliation check toronto defenceman king clancy had delivered shore. bailey not intended target of check; shore wanted hit clancy instead. bailey badly hurt, unconscious , bleeding. leafs red horner took offence hit, , subsequently knocked out shore punch. shore forgiven after game when both players regained consciousness, bailey saying part of game. however, bailey pass out , lapse convulsions. bailey not expected live after single night in hospital after suffering severe hemorrhaging. made known shore have been charged manslaughter bailey die. fortunately, gradually recovered, hockey career over. actions, shore received 16-game suspension, third of 48-game schedule of time, while horner suspended remainder of 1933.


the game proposed walter gilhooley, sports editor of journal in montreal. proposal become reality on january 24, 1934, in meeting of nhl s board of governors in 1934. nhl s first all-star game held @ maple leaf gardens in toronto, during bailey s #6 uniform retired leafs. first number retired in nhl. game saw leafs battle against all-star team made of players other 8 teams, leafs won 7–3. 1 of more memorable moments before game when bailey presented shore all-star jersey, showing public bailey had forgiven him actions. bailey presented trophy nhl president frank calder before game in hope trophy go winner of annual all-star game benefit of injured players.
