the present-day settlement first mentioned rus in document of 1064. roč or rozzo, names derive celtic roz. related name roc common in wide areas under celts influence. area had been settled in protohistoric times. romans called castrum rotium or rocium.


while former march of istria gradually incorporated venetian stato da màr, roč 12th century onwards developed fortified town , centre of croatian literature. local church of st. anthony holds precious roč glagolitic abecedarium 13th century. first croatian printed book, 1483 missale romanum glagolitice, prepared in roč 1 juri Žakan. 1797 treaty of campo formio, istria fell habsburg monarchy , later became part of austrian littoral. after world war , dissolution of austria-hungary, istria including rozzo partitioned italy in treaty of rapallo (1920). after end of world war ii, istria including rozzo ceded yugoslavia. after breakup of yugoslavia in 1991, of istria (including roč) became part of present-day republic of croatia.
