stoddart born in diamond harbour, canterbury, new zealand in 1865, 1 of 6 children born mark pringle stoddart (1819-1885) , anna barbara (née schjott). grandfather (mark stoddart s father) admiral pringle stoddart famous british royal navy officer. uncle scottish poet thomas tod stoddart. family moved scotland in 1876, , stoddart attended edinburgh ladies college there. when 14 family returned new zealand, moving fendalton in christchurch.


when canterbury college school of art (now known ilam school of fine arts) opened in 1882, enrolled, completing studies in 1890. awarded second grade full certificate. during period became member of palette club, association of artists committed working nature.
