in may 1998 sam 26000 flown national museum of united states air force @ wright-patterson afb near dayton, ohio. final flight staged on museum grounds benefit of media , museum visitors. aircraft circled museum several times @ low altitude before landing on original wright field airstrip alongside museum. plane taxied museum s restoration hangars , crew disembarked, while members of press explored aircraft. after several months of work museum s restoration staff, aircraft placed on permanent display in museum s presidential hangar. public can walk through aircraft; while original intent (according museum personnel) restore aircraft how looked when kennedy president, later determined leave aircraft interior looked when delivered u.s. air force museum in may, 1998. in december 2009, sam 26000 taken off display , moved museum s restoration area, repainted presidential paint scheme. sam 26000 returned presidential planes hangar @ wright-patterson air force museum.
