published in 1791, criticizes accepted conservative pedagogical theories, of campe , basedow. holst analyzes ideas perspective of educator, , points out flaws , contradictions within them. calls attention impractical nature of ideas.

in 1799 holst responded success of novel elisa, appeared in fifth edition. wrote 4 letters title character criticizing self-sacrificing , submissive role of women. seems first public push gender equality. according holst, woman s attachment spouse did not detract autonomy. however, emphasized woman s responsibility domestic duty , referred own marriage domestic bliss.

in work, holst makes case higher, ungendered education males , females alike. notion radical: unlike many of prominent female-education advocates before such la roche, herder , goethe, holst rejected idea of separate curriculums each gender, believing women , should learn same things men do. not accepted idea @ time. ideas diverged contemporary equal education advocates well, including likes of hippel, wollstonecraft , condorcet: while in favor of advanced public coeducation system, holst insisted on professional maternal educator instruct children in academic disciplines childhood through adolescence. women thoroughly educated fit educate next generation, , holst reasoned every woman educated. advocated in depth knowledge of history, sciences, philosophy, geography , arts. holst stressed important quality of effective maternal educator ability draw meaningful connections among disciplines. placed emphasis on individual perfection, urging women continually engage in intellectual pursuits throughout course of lives.


she made several demands female education:



women have complete freedom study every subject.
they given access original sources, opposed written women, claimed offered “superficial knowledge” , “treat [women] overgrown children.”
exceptionally intelligent women have access formal university education. free of pressure have children. used philosophers kant , leibniz examples, noting both celibate “immortal works, offspring of minds, have enriched world.” why then, holst argued, shouldn’t same apply women?
it accepted women capable of achieving in advanced fields of thought. holst asserts “there exists no proof woman’s mind cannot comprehend higher sciences.”
