iowa state, georgia , cornell

in spring of 1895, warner asked reference fill vacant head coaching position @ iowa state university, in ames, iowa. instead of giving reference, warner himself applied job , received offer $25 (approximately $670 in 2016) week. @ same time, decided apply other schools , received offer of $34 (approximately $915 in 2016) per week university of georgia in athens, georgia. because iowa state began season in august—almost 1 , half months prior beginning in georgia, warner able work out deal. $150 (approximately $4,000 in 2016), coach in iowa august until second week of september; , head georgia , begin coaching there.

in warner s first season @ georgia, hired @ salary of $34 per week. school charter member of southern intercollegiate athletic association (siaa), first athletic conference in south. football team had 3 wins , 4 losses, including loss north carolina not-yet-legal forward pass. rehired @ salary of $40 per week, , next season georgia had 1 of school s first great teams. undefeated record, team won first conference title. avenged loss north carolina, winning 24–16, first time in southern football history football supremacy of virginia , north carolina challenged.


during 2 years warner played 2 games against john heisman, future coaching legend. heisman head coach @ auburn university, , faced each other in 1895 , 1896 games of deep south s oldest rivalry, annual confrontation has continued present day. in 1895, auburn tigers defeated bulldogs 12–6. auburn team led quarterback reynolds tick tichenor, known punt returns. tichenor had executed first hidden-ball trick in earlier auburn game against vanderbilt, , used again against georgia. next year, tichenor faced georgia s richard von albade gammon, star quarterback in first year under warner. both quarterbacks played and, unlike previous year, warner s team won 16–6. second touchdown came right after first onside kick in south.

after georgia s outstanding 1896 performance, warner returned alma mater cornell @ twice georgia salary. while remaining head coach @ iowa state, coached cornell records of 5–3–1 in 1897 , 10–2 in 1898; in latter season, cornell outscored opponents 296–29. despite 1898 success, tension existed within team, assistant coach (backed large proportion of players) lobbied replace warner. acknowledging issue leadership, warner resigned.

in 1904, after 5 years @ carlisle (see below), warner returned cornell 1904 team little improved on previous year. following 2 years better, 1905 team losing undefeated champion penn 1 point. game next year scoreless tie, , cornell lost 1 game season (to princeton).

after leaving cornell (the first time), warner became head coach of football team @ carlisle indian industrial school in 1899, flagship indian boarding school founded teach children , young men skills advance in american society. late-nineteenth- , early-twentieth-century football teams nationally prominent, , warner paid $1,200 (approximately $33,000 in 2016), exceptionally high salary coach @ time.

warner s next 2 years less fruitful. 1900 football team went 6–4–1, losing 3 games big four, , 1901 season losing one, carlisle posting 5–7–1 record. following year, team posted improved 8–3 record, when warner began implementing double (lateral) passes. carlisle s quarterback jimmy johnson make lateral pass halfback running towards sideline, bringing defense him tossed ball fast-running johnson.

during time @ carlisle, warner made several significant contributions football offense, including body block technique , single- , double-wingback formations. under warner, carlisle quarterback frank mount pleasant , fullback pete hauser became 2 of first regular spiral passers in football (the forward pass legalized in 1906). in 1908 introduced technique of body blocking, instead of blocking shoulders.

the 1907 team included young jim thorpe, considered 1 of greatest athletes ever lived. thorpe weighed 155 lb (70 kg), light football player. warner played him substitute, encouraging him put time track , field. 1909, warner had thorpe competing in track , field , won 14 events. in 1911, thorpe began training upcoming olympics, , won gold medals in pentathlon , decathlon @ 1912 olympic games in stockholm.

when warner arrived @ university of pittsburgh in 1915, 128-year-old school on new campus 3,900 students. inherited team in shape, full of future all-americans, , coached pittsburgh panthers first undefeated season. 6 of 8 games (all shutouts) played @ home on forbes field, including 45–0 victory on carlisle. warner coached pitt teams 29 straight victories, , credited 3 national championships (1915, 1916 , 1918). coaching pittsburgh 1915 1923, compiled 60–12–4 record.


although 1915 season success, next year s team 1 of greatest of warner s career. panthers again undefeated and, previous year, 6 of 8 games shutouts. thirty-two of 35 players western pennsylvania, near pittsburgh. team scored 255 points, conceding 25. warner considered team improvement because defense more dominant previous year s. panthers consensus national champions, , warner became recognized 1 of football s greatest coaches.

the 1918 season cut short @ end of november due continuing effects of world war , influenza pandemic. 5 games played, , season s final game in cleveland against naval reserve. warner s first loss @ pitt, 1 of controversial games in school history. according warner , several reporters covering game, pitt robbed officials. referees said timekeeper s watch broken, ended first half before pitt able score , allowed reserves time in fourth quarter pull ahead, 10–9. although refused acknowledge loss, warner s 29-game winning streak came end. moon ducote kicked 41-yard, game-winning field goal naval reserve, , warner called him greatest football player ever saw . despite loss, number of selectors named 4–1 1918 panthers national champion. team led freshman running tom davies, averaged 150 yards per game on four-year career.


the 1919 season began high expectations; world war over, , key players had returned service. however, things did not go warner s way; @ beginning of season, problems offensive line , on flanks became apparent. first defeat @ syracuse, orangemen won 20–3. 1919 panthers had 6 wins, 2 losses , 1 tie.


they undefeated in 1920, ties against syracuse , undefeated penn state. in 1921 team s record dipped 5–3–1, pitt made college football history on october 8, 1921. harold w. arlin announced first live radio broadcast of college football game in united states forbes field on kdka, panthers defeated west virginia 21–13 in annual backyard brawl.


although warner announced before 1922 season leaving take head-coaching position @ stanford, honored contract , remained @ pitt through 1923. 1922 team had 8–2 record, , season ended panthers taking first cross-country train trip defeat stanford 16–7 in palo alto (coached 2 pitt assistants, sent ahead warner). andrew kerr became head coach @ stanford during warner s last 2 years @ pitt. warner s final season worst @ pitt, panthers stumbled 5–4 record in 1923. however, warner era ended on high note 20–3 victory on penn state on november 29.

football on pacific coast had been on rise since late 1910s. in 1922, warner signed contract stanford university in begin coaching in 1924 (after contract pitt expired). health concerns, significant pay raise , rising status of pacific coast football made warner make big change. years later, wrote:



i felt health better on pacific coast. weather conditions @ pittsburgh during football season rather disagreeable, , of late season work had done upon field ankle deep in mud. @ close of every season in poor physical condition, twice being rendered incapable of coaching while recuperated in hospital. doctors advised me climate of pacific coast better man of age , in work in engaged.



in 1924, warner began nine-year tenure @ stanford university. when began coaching, stanford 1 of 9 teams in pacific coast conference (pcc). warner inherited notable squad previous year, including ernie nevers (whom warner considered greatest player) , all-american ends ted shipkey , jim lawson.

the 1927 season 1 of underachievement , ultimate success. stanford lost third game non-conference st. mary s college. stanford s next loss against non-conference santa clara. game against usc 13-to-13 tie.

the 1929 season known warner s regular use of hook , lateral, play involves receiver runs curl pattern, catches short pass , laterals ball receiver running crossing route. according october 25, 1929 stanford daily, trickiness pop warner made famous in spin plays , passing evident ... frosh have been drilling week on fast, deceptive forward , lateral pass plays, , reverses have varied attack . season brought warner second straight loss jones, stanford defeated trojans 7–0. usc won conference, , went rose bowl. jones went on win every year thereafter, including 1932, warner s last season @ stanford. because of 5 consecutive defeats, warner severely criticized stanford alumni. in all, warner , jones played 8 games; jones won five, warner 2 , 1 tie. against stanford s main rival, california, warner won 5 games, tied 3 , lost one.

warner left stanford temple university in philadelphia, final head-coaching job, after 1932 season. paid $75,000 (approximately $1,300,000 in 2016) 5 years, 1 of largest salaries ever offered coach @ time. 1934 team undefeated during regular season, losing tulane in first sugar bowl. star of game dave smukler, whom warner considered 1 of great fullbacks.


in later years warner said regretted decision leave stanford temple, , left because of concern school s changing funding priorities. university leadership planning make stanford graduate school; because of increase in number of junior colleges in california, administration saw less need undergraduate instruction @ stanford. because fewer students admitted, higher grade requirements incoming students made admission more difficult , student athletes began enrolling @ usc , california instead of stanford. warner realized had made wrong decision; due economic effects of great depression, number of applicants stanford decreased , athletes again admitted. temple upset florida gators, coached future temple coach josh cody, 20–12 in warner s last game.

while coaching @ temple, warner continued living in palo alto (where stanford located). after 1938 retirement recruited advisor dudley degroot, center @ stanford , head coach @ san jose state university (near palo alto). officially advisor, warner put in charge of offense. according powers, degroot had been using single offense pop changed double wing, doubts of san jose players. however, formation began click , san jose not enjoyed undefeated season highest scoring team in nation. year san jose state spartans played against college of pacific, coached amos alonzo stagg. first time 2 coaches had met since 1907, when warner coaching carlisle , defeated stagg s university of chicago 18–4. warner , degroot s san jose state defeated stagg s pacific tigers, 39–0.
