as of 2013, university had on 20,000 full-time students, of approximately 14,000 undergraduate degree candidates. student base supported approximately 2,800 staff, of 762 faculty. there approximately 1153 non-academic staff , 832 research staff.


the university 1 of ireland s leading research institutes, highest research income in state. university s internal research reputation spans of faculties offers on 120 degree , professional programmes through 7 schools , 27 departments. university had 7 faculties in arts , celtic studies, commerce, engineering, food science , technology, law, medicine, , science. between 2005 , 2006 university restructured these 7 faculties 4 colleges: arts, celtic studies , social science; business , law; medicine , health; , science, engineering , food science. ucc home irish institute of chinese studies, allows students study chinese culture language through arts , commerce. department won european award languages 2008.


student numbers, @ on 20,000 in 2013, increased late 1980s, precipitating expansion of campus acquisition of adjacent buildings , lands. expansion continued opening of alfred o rahilly building in late 1990s, cavanagh pharmacy building, brookfield health sciences centre, extended Áras na macléinn (devere hall), lewis glucksman gallery in 2004, experience ucc (visitors centre) , extension boole library – named first professor of mathematics @ ucc, george boole, developed algebra later make computer programming possible. university completed western gateway building in 2009 on site of former cork greyhound track on western road significant refurbishment tyndall institute buildings @ lee maltings complex.

the university has number of related companies including: cytrea, involved in pharmaceutical formulations; firecomms, ict company concentrating on optical communications; alimentary health biotech healthcare company; biosensia develop integrated micro-system analytical chips; sensl developers of low light sensors , imaging systems; luxcel involved in development of probes , sensors pharmaceutical , food safety industries; , optical metrology innovations develop laser metrology systems.


the college involved in controversy in 2006 when 1 academic, professor des clarke alleged university authorities guilty of financial mismanagement, , called full independent inquiry governance. subsequent inquiry found there no evidence of financial mismanagement.


also in 2006, university re-opened crawford observatory, structure built in 1880 on grounds of university sir howard grubb. grubb, son of grubb telescope building family in dublin, designed observatory , built astronomical instruments structure. university paid extensive restoration , conservation program of building , 3 main telescopes, equatorial, transit circle , sidereostatic telescope.


in october 2008, governing body of university announced ucc first institution in ireland use embryonic stem cells in research.


in november 2009, many ucc buildings damaged flooding. floods affected other parts of cork city, many students being evacuated accommodation. college authorities postponed academic activities week, , indicated take until 2010 before flood damaged property repaired. major scene of damage newly opened western gateway building, main lecture theatre requiring total refit months after opening classes.


as of 2015, university has planned number of celebrations mark bicentenary of mathematician, philosopher , logician george boole - ucc s first professor of mathematics.
