in montreal literary magazine first statement, john sutherland publishes review of poetry of patrick anderson, intuiting homoerotic themes , accusing anderson of sexual experience of kind not normal . although anderson in fact come out gay later in life, married woman @ time; threatened sue, , first statement printed retraction in following issue.

1947

john herbert, eaton s employee , part-time drag queen, arrested in toronto being dressed woman in public, , sentenced 4 months in youth detention centre. experience in jail later inspire 1967 play fortune , men s eyes, landmark in history of both lgbt literature , general theatre in canada.

1949

jim egan, toronto native later become co-plaintiff in landmark legal case egan v. canada, begins writing letters newspapers , magazines protesting depictions of homosexuality , calling reform of laws regarding homosexual canadians. writes letters until 1964, when , partner move british columbia.
