history

in nearby cave, flint artefacts have been found, possibly produced during middle paleolithic period, levallois technique.


each of gospels mention town arimathea once, , in association joseph of arimathea — placed christ s body in own tomb. both eusebius , jerome identify arimathea birthplace of samuel. in 4th century, jerome reported holy paula visited location. strong traditions middle ages buttress claim, celebrating town prophet s original home. monastery of joseph of arimathea erected there. conflicting traditions urge arimathea s location @ modern rantis, 15 miles east of jaffa. other suggestions arimathea include ar-ram , al-bireh-ramallah, 5 , 8 miles north of jerusalem, respectively. swp assumed village ancient , rock-cut tombs found south-west of village.


archaeological excavation have uncovered sherds iron age , persian era, in addition remains of road , building roman era. building, dating byzantine era has been excavated.


crusader era

during crusader era, known arimathia, arimatie, abarimatie, , rantis. 1150, premonstratensians represented in rentis house. in 1159-60 church in village mentioned in crusader sources.


in 1187 rantis conquered saladin, , crusaders never able return.


ottoman era

rantis incorporated ottoman empire in 1517 of palestine, , in 1596 appeared in tax registers being in nahiya of jabal qubal of liwa of nablus. had population of 20 households , 2 batchelors, muslim. villagers paid fixed tax-rate of 33,3 % on agricultural products, including wheat, barley, summer crops, olive trees, goats and/or beehives, , press olives or grapes; total of 2,500 akçe. in 1838, edward robinson noted village, rentis, in jurat merda district, south of nablus.


the french explorer victor guérin visited village in 1870, , found had 400 inhabitants, , surrounded olives , tobacco-plantations.


in 1882 palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine (swp) described rantis village, principally made of adobe, on slope, surrounded open ground , few olives. water supplied cisterns. swp assumed village ancient , rock-cut tombs found there.


british mandate era

in 1922 census of palestine conducted british mandate authorities, rantis had population of 824 inhabitants, muslims, increasing in 1931 census 954, still muslims, in total of 213 houses.


in 1945, population 1,280, muslims, while total land area 30,933 dunams, according official land , population survey. of this, 1,299 allocated plantations , irrigable land, 7,341 cereals, while 30 dunams classified built-up areas.


1948-1967

in wake of 1948 arab–israeli war, , after 1949 armistice agreements, rantis came under jordanian rule.


israeli raid

on 28–29 january 1953 israeli military, estimated @ 120 150 men, using 2-inch mortars, 3-inch mortars, p.i.a.t. (projectors, infantry, anti-tank) weapons, bangalore torpedoes (long metal tubes containing explosive charge), machine-guns, grenades , small arms, crossed demarcation line , attacked jordanian villages of falameh , rantis. @ falameh mukhtar killed, 7 other villagers wounded, , 3 houses demolished. attack lasted 4 , half hours. israel condemned act mixed armistice commission.


post-1967

after six-day war in 1967, rantis has been under israeli occupation. 12% of village land in area b, while remainder 88% in area c. in addition, israel has confiscated village land used bypass roads israeli settlements. segregation wall extends 4km on rantis village land, , leave 1815 dunams (16.6%) of village land behind wall.
