in spring of 1895, warner asked reference fill vacant head coaching position @ iowa state university, in ames, iowa. instead of giving reference, warner himself applied job , received offer $25 (approximately $670 in 2016) week. @ same time, decided apply other schools , received offer of $34 (approximately $915 in 2016) per week university of georgia in athens, georgia. because iowa state began season in august—almost 1 , half months prior beginning in georgia, warner able work out deal. $150 (approximately $4,000 in 2016), coach in iowa august until second week of september; , head georgia , begin coaching there.

ultimately, not did warner end coaching @ iowa state before time @ georgia; while in athens, received weekly updates iowa , sent telegraphs detailed advice following week. 1 story recounts in middle of september (just before leaving georgia), warner took team north west agreed-upon game against butte athletic club of butte, montana. apparently overconfident, warner bet entire sum of iowa state wages — $150 (approximately $4,000 in 2016), on team s victory. @ halftime, team trailed 2–10 against superior team. warner decided enter game, filling in @ guard position. though had positive impact, not sufficient team still lost 10–12. in order try , make losing of iowa state wages, warner worked out deal where, $30 (approximately $800 in 2016), stay in contact iowa state while @ georgia.


soon after warner left georgia, iowa state had first official college game of season. in evanston, north of chicago, underdog iowa state defeated northwestern 36–0. chicago tribune headline read, struck cyclone . since then, iowa state teams have been known cyclones. team finished 3 wins , 3 losses and, georgia, retained warner following season. in 1896, iowa state had 8 wins , 2 losses. despite leaving georgia cornell in 1897, warner remained head coach @ iowa state 3 years, posting winning records.

in warner s first season @ georgia, hired @ salary of $34 per week. school charter member of southern intercollegiate athletic association (siaa), first athletic conference in south. football team had 3 wins , 4 losses, including loss north carolina not-yet-legal forward pass. rehired @ salary of $40 per week, , next season georgia had 1 of school s first great teams. undefeated record, team won first conference title. avenged loss north carolina, winning 24–16, first time in southern football history football supremacy of virginia , north carolina challenged.


during 2 years warner played 2 games against john heisman, future coaching legend. heisman head coach @ auburn university, , faced each other in 1895 , 1896 games of deep south s oldest rivalry, annual confrontation has continued present day. in 1895, auburn tigers defeated bulldogs 12–6. auburn team led quarterback reynolds tick tichenor, known punt returns. tichenor had executed first hidden-ball trick in earlier auburn game against vanderbilt, , used again against georgia. next year, tichenor faced georgia s richard von albade gammon, star quarterback in first year under warner. both quarterbacks played and, unlike previous year, warner s team won 16–6. second touchdown came right after first onside kick in south.

after georgia s outstanding 1896 performance, warner returned alma mater cornell @ twice georgia salary. while remaining head coach @ iowa state, coached cornell records of 5–3–1 in 1897 , 10–2 in 1898; in latter season, cornell outscored opponents 296–29. despite 1898 success, tension existed within team, assistant coach (backed large proportion of players) lobbied replace warner. acknowledging issue leadership, warner resigned.


return cornell

in 1904, after 5 years @ carlisle (see below), warner returned cornell 1904 team little improved on previous year. following 2 years better, 1905 team losing undefeated champion penn 1 point. game next year scoreless tie, , cornell lost 1 game season (to princeton).
