holy basil erect, many-branched subshrub, 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall hairy stems. leaves green or purple; simple, petioled, ovate, 5 cm (2.0 in)-long blade has toothed margin; scented , have decussate phyllotaxy. purplish flowers placed in close whorls on elongate racemes . 2 main morphotypes cultivated in india , nepal green-leaved (sri or lakshmi tulasi) , purple-leaved (krishna tulasi).
