saab studied variant of gripen capable of operating aircraft carriers in 1990s. in 2009, launched sea gripen project in response india s request information on carrier-borne aircraft. brazil may require new carrier aircraft. following meeting ministry of defence (mod) officials in may 2011, saab agreed establish development center in uk expand on sea gripen concept. in 2013, saab s lennart sindahl stated development of optionally manned version of gripen e capable of flying unmanned operations being explored firm; further development of optionally manned , carrier versions require commitment of customer. on 6 november 2014, brazilian navy expressed interest in carrier-based variant of gripen.

in july 2013, assembly began on first pre-production aircraft. 60 jas 39cs retrofitted e-models 2023, has been revised gripen es having new-built airframes , reused parts jas 39cs. first production aircraft delivered in 2018. in march 2014, saab revealed detailed design , indicated planned receive military type certification in 2018. first gripen e rolled out on 18 may 2016. saab delayed first flight 2016 2017 focus on civilian-grade software certification, high speed taxi tests began in december 2016. on 15 june 2017, saab completed first flight of gripen e.


in september 2015, saab aeronautics head lennard sindhal announced electronic warfare version of gripen f two-seater under development.
