ostriker s books of nonfiction explore many of same themes manifest in verse. include writing woman (1983), explores poems of sylvia plath, anne sexton, h.d., may swenson , adrienne rich, , nakedness of fathers: biblical visions , revisions (1994), approaches torah midrashic sensibility. wrote introduction giannina braschi s empire of dreams, postmodern poetry classic of spanish caribbean (1994).


ostriker’s sixth collection of poems, imaginary lover (1986), won william carlos williams award of poetry society of america. crack in (1996) national book award finalist, , won paterson poetry award , san francisco state poetry center award. little space: poems selected , new, 1968–1998 1998 national book award finalist.


ostriker’s recent nonfiction book love of god (2007), work continues midrash exploration of biblical texts begun feminist revision , bible (1993) , nakedness of fathers: biblical visions , revisions (1994). dancing @ devil’s party (2000) examines work of poets william blake , walt whitman maxine kumin. in introduction book, disagrees w. h. auden’s assertion poetry makes nothing happen. poetry, ostriker writes, can tear @ heart claws, make neural nets shiver, flood hope, despair, longing, ecstasy, love, anger, terror[.]”
