the construction of road decreed tsar 2 months after conclusion of treaty of nerchinsk, on 22 november 1689, did not start until 1730 , not finished until mid-19th century. previously, siberian transport had been river via siberian river routes. first russian settlers arrived in siberia cherdyn river route superseded babinov overland route in late 1590s. town of verkhoturye in urals eastern point of babinov road.


the longer siberian route started in moscow vladimir highway , passed through murom, kozmodemyansk, kazan, perm, kungur, yekaterinburg, tyumen, tobolsk, tara, kainsk, tomsk, yeniseysk , irkutsk. after crossing lake baikal road split near verkhneudinsk. 1 branch continued east nerchinsk while other went south border post of kyakhta linked camel caravans crossed mongolia great wall gate @ kalgan.


in 19th century, route moved south. tyumen road proceeded through yalutorovsk, ishim, omsk, tomsk, achinsk , krasnoyarsk before rejoining older route @ irkutsk. remained vital artery connecting siberia moscow , europe until last decades of 19th century, when superseded trans-siberian railway , amur cart road. automobile equivalent trans-siberian highway.
