early years
warner born april 5, 1871 on farm in springville, new york. son of william warner, cavalry officer in american civil war, , schoolteacher adaline scobey. in 1878 railroad came springville, , 4 years later family moved house on east main street.
plump child, warner known butter . began playing baseball @ age, , skilled pitcher. nobody in town owned football; exposure new sport @ young age inflated cow s bladder, , few knew rules, game more resembled soccer. warner s east main street house attracted number of friends; when neighbor told mother boys play damage lawn, replied: m raising boys, not grass .
in 1889 @ 19 years old warner graduated springville-griffith institute , joined family in moving down wichita falls, texas, work on new purchased cattle , wheat ranch totaling on hundreds of acres. aside ranching, warner got job assisting tinsmith. interested in art kid — learning how paint watercolor landscapes, , tinsmith learned how use tools make cups, teapots, baking pans lanterns.

in 1892, warner returned springville , began use cowboy experience gamble on horse races. although had no interest in college, after coming practically forced attend cornell university s law school, lost of money @ races. later warner wrote dare not write father , tell him broke — felt way funds inform father decided study law. father, had wanted him lawyer, sent him $100 (approximately $2,500 in 2016).
eventually, warner became known pop because 1 of oldest students @ cornell. @ end of 1894, warner left cornell , began working attorney in buffalo, new york. job lasted few months.
playing career
on warner s train ride ithaca (the site of cornell), met carl johanson, cornell s football coach, impressed warner s weight (200 pounds). johanson practically ordered warner attend practice. happened though warner admitted had never handled real football.
despite commitment football, @ time warner s true passion baseball. during 1 of first practices @ cornell badly injured shoulder , never played serious baseball again. warner participated in track , field , school s heavyweight boxing champion 2 years.

during 3 years @ cornell, warner played guard on football team. though graduated in spring of 1894, returned post-graduate , named captain of 1894 team, had 6–4–1 record.
due then-tradition of alumni coming assist undergraduate teams in rivalry games, cornell s coach marshall newell left several weeks assist harvard in rivalry game yale. captain, warner put in charge during coach s absence. during time warner came first original play: 3 backs protected rusher fake run 1 side, while quarterback kept ball , hand runner, had open field run through on other side. during first, in-game execution of play, warner carried ball , able run clear 25 yards. however, warner guard , not runner, incorrectly holding ball, , fumbled upon being tackled.
