career

born , raised in reading, berkshire, gill studied @ university of birmingham (bcom industrial, economic , business studies, 1978), becoming chartered accountant price waterhouse in 1981. after two-year spell in san francisco, left firm in 1986 join boc group in corporate finance department, , avis rent car system in 1990. @ avis, responsible disposal of european leasing business ge capital us$1 billion in august 1992. subsequently, finance director @ proudfoot plc, worldwide management consulting business, quoted on london stock exchange, , @ first choice holidays plc, third largest uk tour operator, before joining manchester united f.c. in 1997.

gill joined manchester united plc in 1997 finance director. in august 2000, promoted deputy chief executive whilst retaining responsibilities finance director. in july 2001, nick humby appointed finance director of manchester united plc, gill promoted again time title of group chief executive officer, allowing him concentrate on managing day-to-day operations of business (including sponsorship & marketing, business development, financial services, conference & catering, ticketing & membership , group property).


in september 2003, after departure of previous chief executive peter kenyon chelsea f.c., gill promoted chief executive of manchester united plc. in 2005, appointed chief executive of private limited company, manchester united ltd, succeeded manchester united plc after takeover malcolm glazer.


gill vice-chairman of management committee of defunct g-14, organisation of leading european football clubs. however, in september 2009, elected two-year place on board of european club association, organisation created replace g-14.


on 20 february 2013, manchester united announced gill leave post chief executive in summer of 2013, remain on board director. replaced executive vice-chairman ed woodward.

in march 2015, gill elected britain s fifa vice-president, replacing northern ireland s jim boyce, sitting on fifa council 4-year term.


following indictments in united states of 9 high-ranking fifa officials , 5 corporate executives on charges including racketeering, wire fraud, , money laundering in may 2015, gill threatened resign newly elected fifa role if sepp blatter re-elected fifa president or did not stand down. blatter won re-election fifth term, , gill rejected role fifa vice-president , member of executive committee in protest @ blatter s regime. not see how there change of world football while mr blatter remains in post gill stated. on 2 june, 4 days after fifa s 65th fifa congress, blatter abruptly announced resigning, allowing gill reconsider position had not yet formalised resignation.
