Silurian Period Phanerozoic



the silurian spans 440 million years 415 million years, saw warming snowball earth. period saw mass evolution of fish, jaw-less fish became more numerous, jawed fish evolved, , first freshwater fish evolved, though arthropods, such sea scorpions, remained apex predators. terrestrial life evolved, included arachnids, fungi, , centipedes. evolution of vascular plants (cooksonia) allowed plants gain foothold on land. these terrestrial plants forerunners of plant life on land. during time, there 4 continents: gondwana (africa, south america, australia, antarctica, india), laurentia (north america parts of europe), baltica (the rest of europe), , siberia (northern asia). recent rise in sea levels provided new habitats many new species.
