Muslim views Binding of Isaac

ibrahim s sacrifice. timurid anthology, 1410-11.

the version in quran differs in genesis. in islamic sources, when abraham tells son vision, son accepted sacrificed fulfillment of god s command, , no binding altar occurred. quran states when abraham asked righteous son, god granted him son possessing forbearance. son named ishmael. when son able walk , work him, abraham saw vision sacrificing son, ishmael. when told son it, son agreed fulfill command of god in vision. when both had submitted god , ready sacrifice, god told abraham had fulfilled vision, , provided him ram sacrifice instead. god promised reward abraham. next 2 verses state god granted abraham righteous son isaac , promised more rewards.

among muslim scholars, however, there dispute on identity of son. argument of scholars believed isaac rather ishmael (notably ibn qutaybah , al-tabari) god s perfecting mercy on abraham , isaac referred making abraham friend, , rescuing isaac. on contrary, other parties held promise sarah of son, isaac, , grandson, jacob (sura 11:71–74) excluded possibility of premature death of isaac. , has become mainstream muslim view first-born son ismail, not isaac, asked sacrificed in vision, , second son isaac born later 1 of rewards abraham s fulfillment of vision.

the submission of abraham , son celebrated , commemorated muslims on days of eid al-adha. during festival, can afford , ones in pilgrimage sacrifice ram, cow, sheep or camel. part of sacrifice meat eaten household , remaining distributed neighbors , needy. festival marks end of hajj pilgrimage mecca.
