ram manohar lohia born on 23 march 1910 @ akbarpur in present-day uttar pradesh, in prosperous vaishya family. mother died in 1912, when 2 years old, , later brought father hiralal never remarried. in 1918 accompanied father bombay completed high school education. attended banaras hindu university complete intermediate course work after standing first in school s matriculation examinations in 1927. joined vidyasagar college, under university of calcutta , in 1929, earned b.a. degree. decided attend frederick william university (today s humboldt university of berlin, germany) on prestigious educational institutes in britain convey dim view of british philosophy. learned german , received financial assistance based on outstanding academic performance, studying national economy major subject doctoral student 1929 1933.


lohia wrote phd thesis paper on topic of salt taxation in india, focusing on gandhi s socio-economic theory.
