julius wagner-jauregg born julius wagner on 7 march 1857 in wels, upper austria, son of adolph johann wagner , ludovika jauernigg ranzoni. family name changed wagner von jauregg when father given title of ritter von jauregg (a hereditary title of nobility) in 1883 austro-hungarian empire. hence retained name julius wagner ritter von jauregg until 1918 when empire dissolved, , nobility abolished. family name contracted wagner-jauregg . attended schottengymnasium in vienna before going on study medicine @ university of vienna 1874 1880, studied salomon stricker in institute of general , experimental pathology. obtained doctorate in 1880 thesis l origine et la fonction du cœur accéléré. left institute in 1882.
