changes in house numbers

on 24 november 2011, harry jenkins resigned speaker of house of representatives , returned labor backbench. later, day, deputy speaker peter slipper elected speaker , quit liberal national party become independent. changed nominal confidence , supply numbers on floor of house 75–74 76–73. in january 2012, andrew wilkie withdrew guarantee of confidence incumbent government, changing numbers 75–73 in event of abstention, or 75–74 in event of support vote of no confidence in government. in april 2012, labor s craig thomson moved crossbenches independent mp, , in may, wa national tony crook moved crossbenches nationals, did not join coalition. changes brought government 71 seats, coalition 72 seats, , 7 crossbenchers. on 9 october 2012, after unsuccessful vote of no confidence in speakership, slipper resigned speaker , replaced labor deputy speaker anna burke. slipper remained independent mp.
