Service history 4 (New York City Subway service)












during extension of irt lexington avenue line north of 42nd street–grand central terminal, shuttle elevated trains served irt jerome avenue line (which @ time between east 149th street–grand concourse , kingsbridge road) starting june 2, 1917. on april 15, 1918, shuttles extended woodlawn. second shuttle, using subway cars, 149th street–grand concourse grand central started on july 17, 1918.


on august 1, 1918, entire jerome , lexington avenue lines completed , connection broadway–seventh avenue line @ 42nd street removed. trains began running between woodlawn , bowling green.


on december 11, 1921, lexington avenue–jerome avenue subway trains began running north of 167th street @ times, replacing elevated trains, ran woodlawn during rush hours, on terminated @ 167th street during non-rush hours.


beginning on november 4, 1925, rush hour 4 trains extended atlantic avenue crown heights–utica avenue. 2 years later, on december 5, 1927, weekday evening service extended utica avenue. following year, midday 4 service went utica avenue.


as of 1934, 4 trains ran woodlawn utica avenue weekday rush , saturday morning peak , afternoon, atlantic avenue weekday midday, saturday morning after peak, , late nights, , south ferry evenings , sundays. trains ran express in manhattan except late nights, , in brooklyn. first time 6 became pelham shuttle between pelham bay park , 125th street–lexington avenue.


on august 20, 1938, saturday morning after peak service extended utica avenue.


beginning on may 10, 1946, 4 trains made express during late nights running on 12 minute headways 6 went brooklyn bridge during time. 4 trains ran local 12:30 5:30am. @ time 4 trains terminated @ atlantic avenue.


beginning on december 16, 1946, trains extended atlantic avenue new lots avenue during late nights, running express between atlantic , franklin avenues.


when board of transportation began replace older subway cars starting r12 cars in 1948. these cars, numbers assigned irt lines. lexington avenue–jerome line trains given number 4. 1964, cars had route numbers on them.


during 1950, saturday morning service cut south ferry.


starting on december 15, 1950, 4 four trains began operating during rush hours flatbush avenue on nostrand avenue line. on day, weekday midday service cut atlantic avenue south ferry. additionally, on january 18, 1952, 4 service atlantic avenue during weekday middays restored.


on march 19, 1954, late-night service in brooklyn began making stops, resumed operating express between atlantic avenue , franklin avenue on june 29, 1956.


on may 3, 1957, weekday rush trains flatbush avenue discontinued, while @ same time evening, saturday , sunday afternoon trains extended utica avenue, while sunday morning trains extended atlantic avenue.


starting on march 1, 1960, late-night 4 trains resumed making stops in manhattan; first time 4 , 6 ran local in manhattan late nights. arrangement ended on october 17, 1965, when 4 went express in manhattan late nights.


beginning on april 8, 1960, rush hour 4 trains ran flatbush avenue, , pm rush hour 4 trains alternated between flatbush , utica avenues. during weekday evenings , late nights 4 trains went flatbush avenue, making stops in brooklyn.


by 1972, 4 began skip 138th street weekdays during rush hours in peak direction continues (am manhattan , pm there). @ time, 4 went atlantic avenue @ times, extended utica avenue rush hours running express in brooklyn along eastern parkway. select 4 trains ran flatbush avenue rush hours running express between atlantic , franklin avenues, , late night service still stops in brooklyn flatbush avenue.


on may 23, 1976, sunday morning trains extended utica avenue, express in brooklyn.


beginning on january 13, 1980, 4 trains resumed operating local in manhattan during late night hours replace 6, again became pelham shuttle between 125th street , pelham bay park.


starting on july 10, 1983, 4 trains ran utica avenue, weekday midday trains ran atlantic avenue, , late-night trains ran local during late nights , sunday morning operating new lots avenue. on august 29, 1988, current service pattern began weekday midday 4 trains going utica avenue, , 5 terminating @ bowling green make room (the 5 has since been extended flatbush avenue 2 weekdays until 8:45pm).


for short time in 1990 starting january 21, late-night express service in manhattan restored, 6 train extended brooklyn bridge late nights, late-night express service permanently discontinued on october 5, 1990, when 6 last time cut pelham shuttle 125th street–lexington avenue.


beginning on october 3, 1999, 4 , 6 trains once again began operate local in manhattan when 6 permanently went brooklyn bridge late nights.


from june 8, 2009, june 26, 2009, new york city transit conducted pilot program express jerome avenue line service. 4 morning weekday rush hour trains woodlawn stopped @ mosholu parkway, burnside avenue , 149th street–grand concourse before resumed regular service in manhattan , brooklyn.


beginning on july 6, 2009, select 4 trains utica avenue began running express between 167th street , burnside avenue turn there rush hours. when first started, stop program woodlawn or bedford park bound service on r142/r142a (the current cars running on 4) used until 2011, when new stop program introduced on cars 4 burnside avenue.


on october 26, 2009, 4 express pilot program implemented based on success of first , ran until december 11, 2009. program same 1 in june except express trains stopped @ bedford park boulevard–lehman college.


as result of planned repairs hurricane sandy-related damage in clark street tube, carries irt broadway–seventh avenue line, between june 2017 , june 2018, 4 extended new lots avenue on weekends, running local in brooklyn south of nevins street in place of 3.
