House of Lords William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield







after formation of fox-north coalition, mansfield agreed act speaker of house of lords, taking post in february 1783. main item of debate during coalition ministry east india bill, provoked bitter arguments in both house of lords , house of commons. in attempt speed process of passing bill, mansfield left position speaker debate directly on 15 december; when failed returned woolsack next day. failure of bill caused government dismissed, , mansfield left position on 23 december 1783.


mansfield had been made earl of mansfield, in county of nottingham, on 31 october 1776. attended lords lord speaker, , last record of him attending (other presence @ state opening of parliament on 23 march 1784) in december 1783.
