in medieval period, hagi dominated yoshimi clan, built hagi castle, ruins of can visited today. mōri clan became daimyōs of chōshū domain @ beginning of edo period , built hagi castle @ foot of mt. shizuki in 1608. transferred capital of domain hiroshima hagi @ same time. since then, hagi developed political center of chōshū on 250 years.


when meiji restoration came in 1860s, result of efforts samurai chōshū , number of other domains, small city gained great historical significance. many japanese statesmen , prime ministers born , brought in city.


on march 6, 2005, hagi absorbed towns of susa , tamagawa, , villages of asahi, fukue, kawakami , mutsumi (all abu district) create new, expanded city of hagi.
