biography
early life

li born scholar-gentry family in cangwu county, wuzhou, guangxi in 1886. mother died when 4 years old. in 1903, li enrolled @ wuzhou middle school, studied under right wing kuomintang leader hu hanmin. in 1904, transferred liangguang military middle school in guangdong, , 3 years later selected advanced study @ officers military academy in beijing. interrupted studies after wuchang revolt of october 1911 serve chief of staff of 22nd division of revolutionary army in jiangsu. after establishment of republic of china, li completed education , remained @ academy, called military staff college.


early career

li returned guangdong in 1921 @ invitation of guangdong army chief of staff deng keng. deng assassinated in march 1922, , chen jiongming staged coup in june of year, li helped put down. this, received command of army s 1st division.


in 1924, after serving briefly commissioner of reconstruction of west river-wuzhou area , wuzhou garrison commandor, li became deputy dean of newly established whampoa military academy under chiang kai-shek. after sun yat-sen s death in march 1925, guangdong government reorganized national government, , li appointed commander of fourth army, had formerly been guangdong army. spent next year destroying chen jiongming s remaining power.


when northern expedition began in july 1926, li s fourth army joined push northward. during time, li served governor of guangdong, military affairs commissioner, , acting president of whampoa military academy. in 1927, elected central executive committee of kuomintang. in november 1927, li left guangdong wang jingwei attend plenary session of committee in shanghai on subject of restoring party unity. in absence, zhang fakui staged coup. forces loyal li forced zhang surrender, , li returned guangdong on 4 january 1928.


on 7 february 1928, li made member of standing committee of military affairs commission. made commander in chief of newly established eighth route army. on 1 march, li became chairman of guangdong branch political council of kuomintang, , on 30 march made chief of general staff of northern expedition. during remainder of year, li attended meetings in beijing, , briefly served acting commander in chief of nationalist forces when chiang kai-shek left beijing nanjing. appointed state council on 8 october , resigned governor of guangdong in november.


sino-japanese war , revolutionary committee of kuomintang

in 1929, li traveled nanjing attend third national congress , mediate dispute had arisen between nationalist government , new guangxi clique. however, talks broke down in march, members of clique expelled kuomintang, , li placed in detention. not freed until after japanese attack on mukden in 1931.


li did not have significant political power until 1933, when joined chen mingshu launch revolt in fujian. li made chairman of people s revolutionary government @ fuzhou, revolt suppressed, , li forced flee hong kong in january 1934.


in 1935, li joined associates found chinese people s revolutionary league, advocated resistance against japan , overthrow of nationalist government. in 1936, li participated in joint guangdong-guangxi revolt against government, after collapsed, li returned hong kong. order arrest rescinded.


in 1938, li restored membership in kuomintang, , again became member of military affairs commission , state council. during sino-japanese war, li served in several military posts. in 1944, appointed president of military advisory council, instead worked consolidate resistance against japan in southern guangxi. @ sixth national congress of kuomintang in may 1945, li elected central supervisory committee of kuomintang, , served delegate national assembly following year.


on 8 march 1947, li issued statement calling reconciliation between kuomintang , chinese communist party. this, again expelled kuomintang making unwarranted statements , inciting people riot. li began working unite current , former kuomintang members opposed national government policies. led formation of revolutionary committee of kuomintang in 1948, li first chairman.


people s republic of china

li left hong kong in 1949 , traveled north beiping, assisted in preparatory work founding of people s republic of china. after inauguration of new government, li became 1 of 6 vice-chairmen, vice-president of sino-soviet friendship association. in january 1953, li became member of committee assigned draft first constitution of people s republic. served delegate national people s congress (npc) in 1954. new constitution reduced number of vice-chairmen 6 two, li gave post , became vice vice chair of npc standing committee. li continued hold posts in government until death on 9 october 1959 in beijing due stomach cancer , cerebral thrombosis.


personal life

li married several times , had many children. 1 of sons became dean of agricultural college of lingnan university during 1940s. son, li peiyao, became chairman of national revolutionary committee of kuomintang in 1990s. 3 of daughters students @ yenching university in 1950.
