Service history 3 (New York City Subway service)
on november 23, 1904, irt lenox avenue line opened between 96th street , 145th street. 3 trains ran between 145th street , city hall, making stops.
on july 1, 1918, entire irt broadway–seventh avenue line completed. 3 trains rerouted south of 42nd street irt lexington avenue line new line. made stops south ferry.
as of 1934, 3 service operated between 145th street , south ferry except late nights, when service operated between 145th street , 96th street, making local stops.
beginning on january 4, 1955, 3 trains ran express in manhattan during rush hours , extended flatbush avenue; few layups , put-ins ran new lots. late night service discontinued between 145th street , 96th street. however, december 20, 1957, 3 trains rerouted new lots avenue during rush hours. on february 6, 1959, trains except late nights made express stops in manhattan part of west side improvement , ran flatbush avenue. starting april 8, 1960, 3 trains rerouted new lots. weekday evening service cut shuttle 145th street 135th street only. however, on april 18, 1965, 3 service started run flatbush avenue again. on october 17, 1965, weekend evening service cut shuttle 145th street 135th street.
on may 13, 1968, trains extended newly completed 148th street–lenox terminal. later year, on december 15, all-night shuttle service between 148th street , 135th street brought first time since 1955. on may 23, 1976, current practice of starting sunday service late (9 or 10 am) began. on july 10, 1983, 2 , 3 trains swapped brooklyn terminals, , 3 permanently stationed @ new lots avenue access livonia yard , shops.
beginning on august 5, 1990, late-night shuttles between 148th street , 135th street discontinued , replaced shuttle buses. on september 4, 1994, late-night shuttles between 148th street , 135th street resumed, discontinued again on september 10, 1995. cost-saving measure due low ridership.
from march 2 october 12, 1998, irt lenox avenue line rehabilitated. 3 service rerouted 137th street–city college.
after september 11, 2001, 3 service became local in manhattan. after few switching delays @ 96th street, service changed on september 19, 2001. ran in manhattan express between harlem–148th street , 14th street , replaced 1 service in brooklyn. returned new lots avenue on september 15, 2002.
on july 27, 2008, late night 3 service restored, operating express between 148th street , times square–42nd street.
as result of planned repairs hurricane sandy-related damage in clark street tube, between june 2017 , june 2018 on weekends only, 3 run in manhattan between harlem-148th street , 14th street 4 trains providing service in brooklyn.
