the domestic , foreign missionary society moved philadelphia new york city in 1835. domestic committee , foreign committee rented separate office spaces in different locations 1835 1840, , moved rented office space @ 281 broadway. in 1864, society began exploring possibility of finding permanent home. in 1889, site selected new building society.


the building designed architects robert w. gibson , edward j. neville stent, steel structure , medieval-inspired facade gibson took inspiration town halls of haarlem , medieval amsterdam, , result equal buildings of flemish , dutch renaissance.


in 1963, federation of protestant welfare agencies bought building. designated new york city landmark in 1979, , added national register of historic places in 1982. restored in early, 1990s firm of kapell & kastow,


as part of renovations, 2 floors made available rent other non-profit organizations , space made available conference facility on ground floor. building, sits across 22nd street united charities building, part of proposed extension gramercy park historic district.


the building sold in 2014 approximately $50 million rfr realty , converted condominiums, retail shops on ground floor. in 2017, swedish photography museum fotografiska announced setting art gallery , restaurants in building.
