university of jamestown private liberal arts college founded presbyterian church , located on north side of town. current enrollment approximately 1000 students. ranked u.s. news & world report in top tier of regional undergraduate institutions, notable among religious colleges having been co-educational institution founding in 1883. first fall term opened @ 9 a.m. on tuesday, sept. 29, 1886. after financial hardships, affecting entire county, jamestown college had close doors in spring of 1890. on sept. 22, 1909 jamestown college reopened after population growth in state due improved farming methods. no higher education available between fargo, nd (100 miles east) , missoula, mt (700 miles west), jamestown college became successful school.
