the eastern clock face features outer ring of large golden roman numerals, on larger hand indicates hour, , inner ring on smaller hand indicates minutes. golden sun on hour hand pivot-mounted faces up. below clock face 1 sees idealised profile of city founder duke berchtold v of zähringen. while exact decoration of clockface has varied renovation renovation, current (post-1983) layout of 1770.

the western clock face has similar hands, integral part of victor surbek s 1929 fresco beginning of time . painting depicts chronos swooping down cape fluttering, and, below clockface, adam , eve s eviction paradise angel.
