ever since jesuits founded first university in argentina in 17th century, education managed clergy , conservative upper-class citizens. universities authorities selected them, , professors appointed life. professors decided on subjects taught, following preferences of church , suppressed modern ideas such darwin s theory of evolution


by end of 19th century many changes taking place in argentina. arrival of european immigrants in large waves, new ideas arrived them opposed old oligarchic conservatism. 1912 sáenz peña law of secret vote brought less conservative hipólito yrigoyen presidency in 1916.


it in 1918 students of national university of córdoba, conservative in argentina @ time, demanded revision of university s statutes modernize , democratize them. succeeded in creating student centres, demands ignored.
